When we go with the superstitions itchy palms are a symbol that someone would give or receive money. But, in reality, there are various valid medical reasons why someone’s palms start itching.

You may not know but some common skin disorders such as eczema can result in itchy palms. However, they can also lead to some serious underlying problems, such as liver disease.

Let’s know about the mystery of itchy palms, highlighting causes, meaning, and the needed treatments.

Understanding the Meaning of Itchy Palms

Palm itching or palm pruritus, as it is medically described, is the itching that can make individuals uncomfortable and sometimes irritated.

Unlike other skin conditions linked with the visible rashes, itchy palms can manifest without any visible signs of irritation.

In most scenarios, it can lack visible symptoms that mostly enhance misconceptions regarding the causes and treatment.

Itchy Palm Causes

Itching can be bothersome. Since it can affect regular work, it can even cause irritation in the hands. Some of the most common causes of itchy palm are listed below –

Eczema on the Hands

The non-communicable disease can lead to dryness, discolored skin, blistering, and itchy palms.

Small yet irritating blisters define the features of dyshidrotic eczema that is sub-categorized as hand eczema. It usually affects the hands and occasionally, the feet.

Those who work in such types of work where hands are mostly exposed to the harsh chemicals or excessive dampness usually develop hand eczema.

Allergic Reactions

Occasionally, repeated exposure to the chemicals can cause itchiness in hands that leads to the allergic reaction. An allergic reaction takes about 2-4 days after coming in touch with an allergen.

Diabetes Cause of Itchy hands

Diabetes

The blood sugar levels are linked with diabetes – it can lead to itchy, dry skin. The itchy skin can show up with or without red or flesh-colored pimples on the palms and other body parts.

Reactions to medications

Occasionally, when a person eats something, it causes itching in the palms instead of something their hands have come in touch with.

Itching can be caused with the body’s histamine reactions usually when someone suffers from mild allergic reactions after taking an unfamiliar medication.

In these situations, histamines concentrate in the greater amounts in the hands and feet that is why the palms can get irritable.

A person needs to speak with a medical consultant before stopping a prescription medication.

Nerve Conditions

Occasionally, illnesses such as diabetes that cause damage to the hand’s nerve can result in itching palms. Various other hand nerve dysfunctions known as carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to the same consequences.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by numbness, discomfort, itching, and even paralysis in the hands.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is among the most common causes of itchy hands. The skin of the palms lacks the presence of oil glands. It causes dryness and irritation, particularly in the winters, or in the dry locations.

Skin Damage

Your hand’s delicate skin can become irritated with certain chemicals or substances. Additionally, scrubbing or brushing can irritate your skin. Peeling, itching, and dryness can result from the same.
